چکیده

The X-ray satellite BeppoSAX 1 , a major programme of the Italian space agency with participation of the Dutch space agency, was successfully launched from Cape Canaveral on April 30, 1996. After a 2 months period devoted to engineering check out that confirmed the nominal functionality of the satellite and the scientific payload, we have performed a series of observations of celestial objects devoted to calibrate the instruments and verify their scientific performances. Here we will present some preliminary results obtained in this phase. They are confirming the expected scientific capabilities of the mission.

We report on BeppoSAX broad band (0.1-100 keV) observations of bright Seyfert 2 galaxies and discuss the results in the framework of the unified theory of AGNs. The data are used to probe N H distribution in type 2 objects and to identify heavily absorbed (10 24 ≤ N H ≤ 10 25 cm −2) sources, which are particularly bright in hard X-rays. They also provide, for the first time, high energy spectra...

Preliminary results obtained from BeppoSAX observation of the starburst galaxy NGC253 are presented. X-ray emission from the object is clearly extended but most of the emission is concentrated on the optical nucleus. Preliminary analysis of the LECS and MECS data obtained using the central 4' region indicates that the continuum is well fitted by two thermal components at 0.9 keV and 7 keV. Fe K...

Following a series of deep observations of the Galactic Bulge region performed with the Wide Field Cameras telescopes on board BeppoSAX, it has been possible to study throughout a long time period a number of persistent X-ray sources. We report on the behaviour of GRS 1758-258, an X-ray binary suggested as a black hole candidate on the basis of its timing and spectral characteristics. The sourc...
